Are Jobs As We Know Them Becoming Obsolete?

An intereresting and provocative article that suggests that jobs as we know them are becoming obsolete: 

Marshall Brain, writing in his informative blog, cities the explosive growth in the use of robotics–not on the assembly line but in ordinary retail businesses, including McDonalds, Home Depot, and others. It is not uncommon now to get your food, money, gas, groceries, and other household items through a robotic kiosk.

Brain cites the principle of Moore's Law–that CPU power in microprocessor chips doubles every 18 to 24 months–to support his argument that a massive number of jobs will be replaced by technology and never return. He forecasts that almost all construction, manufacturing, transportation, whole, retail, and hotel and restaurant jobs will be lost to automation by the year 2050. This would create unemployment levels of up to 50%.

If automation is doing away with many of the jobs our current participants go into, then what are the implications for the workforce system?

October 18 WEBINAR: Employment Transportation Obstacles for People with Disabilities

On October 18 at 1 p.m., DiscoverAbility NJ will sponsor a webinar on Employment Transportation Obstacles for People with Disabilities.

The webinar will feature Andrea Lubin of the Alan M. Voorhees Transportation Center at Rutgers University. She will share the results of a recent consumer survey conducted by the Voorhees Transportation Center designed to examine the transportation issues and obstacles facing New Jerseyans with disabilities who are actively seeking employment.

• House Releases FY 2012 Labor--HHS Draft--Last Thursday, the House appropriations committee released a draft bill providing Fiscal Year (FY) 2012 appropriations for the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education (Labor-HHS). The proposed bill would make devastating cuts to federal workforce and education programs—including more than $2 billion in cuts to programs under the Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration (ETA).

• Life in the 21st Century Workforce--Results of University of Phoenix and US Chamber of Commerce studies of skills employers are looking for. 

• Utah Job Training Services Report--Utah looks at the effectiveness of its workforce services and finds that degree programs, occupational skills training and paid internships are most effective.

DOLETA/ASTD Region 1 Conference on Serving Youth--November 14-16, 2011

The Employment and Training Administration's ETA’s Region 1 Office will co-sponsor a conference in partnership with the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) to strengthen collaboration and service quality for young adults aged 18 to 24 throughout Region 1 states and communities.

Working Collaboratively to Provide Work and Learn Opportunities for Young Adults (18 – 24 years old): A Conference for Teams that Cross Delivery Systems will take place November 14 – 16, 2011 at the Westin Boston Hotel in the waterfront district of Downtown Boston.The purpose of the conference is to help form and strengthen powerful service networks by fostering collaborative partnerships that link human services, education, and workforce resources.  

The conference will combine best practice models, “how-to” advice delivered through panels, interactive workshops, and facilitated planning time designed to help teams and team representatives identify action steps to improve state, regional, and/or local service delivery systems.

Other federal sponsors include the U.S Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families; the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention; and the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Vocational and Adult Education.

Greater Newark Alliance Funders Collaborative Healthcare RFP

The Newark Alliance-led Greater Newark Workforce Funders Collaborative seeks to create workforce innovations that position workers for family-sustaining careers and help employers to meet their skills needs and thereby realize better return on investments in entry-level workers.   As such on Friday the Collaborative announced a notice of grant opportunity for grants totaling $300,000 to develop employer-led or employer-centric workforce partnerships to train northern New Jersey low-skilled adults and entry-level incumbent workers for healthcare careers.  The Collaborative envisions this effort as being a catalyst for creating a sustainable healthcare workforce development pipeline.  

The Collaborative will provide funding to cover a range of activities, including the cost of licensure and/or certification training, coaching and support services for entry-level workers that lead to career ladder/lattice advancement within healthcare professions. 

 For-profit healthcare providers, nonprofits,  and 501(c)(3) organizations with extensive sector knowledge and management capacity may lead a workforce partnership and apply for this grant, including but not limited to employers (preferred), higher education institutions, technical schools, industry associations, workforce investment boards, and community-based organizations.  The workforce partnership at a minimum must include at least one employer and one experienced provider of workforce development services for low-skilled adults. Employers may include but are not limited to: teaching hospitals, nursing homes, assisted-living residences, ambulatory care centers, home healthcare institutions, Federally Qualified Health Centers, health systems, and physicians’ practices.  Applicants must provide evidence of their management capability, organizational capacity, and concrete job placement and advancement opportunities. A bidders' conference will be held October 12th, 2011, and all proposals are due to the Newark Alliance by 5 p.m. October 24, 2011.
